What is a photon?

A photon is one of the primary particles of the universe and is responsible for its basic structure. Photons are responsible for electromagnetic forces, one of the fundamental forces of nature and are often considered by many as the basic unit of light. They are also responsible for forces in the electromagnetic field and are the main component of light that enables it to travel throughout the universe.

Photons are basically small packets of energy, or electromagnetic waves, but have no mass or electric charge. When energy changes, they are released from atoms, travel at the speed of light and can exist as both a wave and a particle. When we look at light, what we are actually seeing is the emission of photons from excited atoms.
